01:48 pm - Transport question... help a tourist out!
Hi everyone,

I've been invited to a friend's wedding in Santa Rosa in about a month's time, and so will be making my very first trip to the Bay Area from Washington DC - on my own! Needless to say, I don't really know how regional transport works around San Francisco. Add to the mix the fact that I don't drive (that is in "cannot drive" rather than "don't want to") and you have my problem:

I need to get from San Francisco to Santa Rosa on a Saturday morning and back on Sunday afternoon.

Do any of you seasoned Bay Areans have any tips? I've checked BART and Amtrak but keep getting confused. Any suggestions - from commuter trains to buses to taxi (if that's feasible) would be much appreciated!

And a quick leisure question: I'm going to be staying for a short alone-time holiday in SF for two days before going to the wedding. Top 5 (or 10) lists of good lesbian accomodation, nightlife, and culture would be AMAZING.

Thank you!

02:10 am - Old Phone Please
Does anyone have an Cingular/AT&T compatible phone that they would be willing to give me or sell me for a small fee. My antenna came off and thus I get no service without going at least 5 blocks from my house to make a phone call. I would really appreciate it, thanks.

09:41 pm - Rental reviews question
Why are all the apartment reviews for the Bay Area so negative? If the apartment complex isn't dirt cheap, it gets a terrible review.

Sorry for the mini-rant....

I'm considering moving to Brisbane in the middle of September, and I was wondering if anyone could give me any information about the area and/or objective reviews. I'm working in SF, but I don't want to live in the city. I'm not a fan of South San Francisco (no offense to anyone who lives there), but any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I am looking to make a fresh start on wow and reroll. Any suggestion what server to start on? I know someone from this community has to be playing this game and I want to roll on a pst server where local people play and make friends, I think it sounds fun.

Ergh... incoming transfer student here. I got a little confused while looking over the Registrar website and academic calender. I just want to make sure I'm on time with registering and all. A few questions came to mind:

1) What is an "appointment"? Is this held with a counselor, or...?
2) How do I set up an appointment?

Meh. Much thanks.

08:51 pm - Another baby name site
I have previously promoted the Baby Name Voyager, a cool Java applet that allows you to see the popularity of any baby name over the past 100+ years.

Today, I found out about another site -- NameTrends.net -- which provides different information on baby names. I learned that while Mason was the 37th most popular U.S. boy's name in 2007, it was the second most popular boy's name in South Dakota (and only 79th most popular in California).

07:21 pm - BookCrossing releases - Petaluma
Not sure how many of you live in the Petaluma area, but I've just released two books in Oak Hill Park!

Still relatively new to this whole BookCrossing thing, but I'm hoping that more people will catch/release books in the Bay Area :D

05:42 pm - Article on Tim Lincecum
A good article in Sports Illustrated on one of my favorite pitchers:

How Tiny Tim Became a Pitching Giant

Verducci spoke with Tim's father, Chris, quite a bit, and also has a lot of quotes from Rick Peterson (former Mets pitching coach). A lot of credit is given to Chris for developing Tim into the pitcher that he has become. A lot of the article is devoted to pitching mechanics, both of Tim's and pitchers in general.

Interesting article, but I have strong reservations about some things. It's pretty much indicated that some pitchers do it right, some do it wrong, and Lincecum does it right. (In terms of pitching mechanics in order to get the most out of your body while at the same time avoiding chronic injury.) We know that Chris certainly thinks so, because he says so and that's why he taught Tim to pitch the way he does. We know Tim is not a large guy, so it's certainly damn impressive that he can do what he does.

But Tim is still a young pitcher. We still don't understand the human body in a lot of ways and what makes it do what it does. I would suspect that you could have written a similar article years ago about other young pitchers (inclusive of great success up to that point, quotes from advocates of a pitcher's mechanics, and predictions of great things to come), only to see that pitcher's career derailed by injuries later. I mean, yeah, in this article people say they saw Mark Prior's woes coming before they happened, and I believe them, but they're probably also cherry picking.

I hope they're right about Lincecum. Yes, because he's a San Francisco Giant, and yes, because I like the guy. He really does seem like a great kid. I know how fickle a sport baseball is, *especially* with young pitchers.

05:32 pm - How the Prius hybrid system works
I've read a lot of pages the past three or so days about how the Prius hybrid system works. This isn't all towards the goal of improving mileage, though that's how I started reading. As it turns out, it's just very interesting. The hybrid system is both simple and complicating. I think it's quite an engineering feat. My knowledge of mechanical engineering and automobiles in general is a step up from your average schmuck, but way way below that of someone who knows anything on the topic at all. One of the best sites I read which focuses on the Prius's system specifically is this one. As a website, it's pretty ugly, but the information is terrific, and it's got some helpful animations as well. Really interesting information, seriously.

04:21 pm - Fried Coke
So...has anyone tried Fried Coke? I'm a bit confused though. Usually batter is covering something and then deep fried. I mean, even Deep Fried Snickers is batter covering something and then deep fried. But the description of Fried Coke sounds like it's the batter that is Coke-flavored, and then you fry...just the batter. I know the entire concept of batter and deep friedness is disgusting to some people, but accepting that part of it, shouldn't the batter be covering something?

Well, I guess I'm thinking about it wrong. If I think about it more like a doughnut or a funnel cake, then I guess it doesn't sound so crazy. In fact, it really does sound like a funnel cake, doesn't it?

03:24 pm - Questions and Introduction
Hello!

My name is Lupin, an 18-year-old girl who wants to go back "home" for college. I currently live in the Dallas area of Texas, but I have relatives in Novato, a northern Marin County town, and I plan to go to a community college in the SF Bay area. However, I need some advice and find out some information so I can effectively make plans. Currently, I am planning to work my butt off down here, save all of my wages, and get a plane ticket to go to my grandparent's and use the rest of what I have saved for tuition.

However, with discussing this with various people, this might not be the best and only option(s) for me.

And so people aren't annoyed, yes, I have gone onto the state's website and other sites to try to find out this information myself, but I haven't found much that really applies to my situation or college students in general. And I've already asked my grandparents; they don't know the specific information I need. But wouldn't you agree that it's better to ask people who would be more familiar with these issues?

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated! Much thanks in advance! Also, if you want to, just post links where I could find this information! )

12:16 am - The Straight Goods on SF Weather
is the weather in San Francisco often quite foggy, cold or cloudy?

i'm living in Vancouver BC and I NEED TO FIND SOME SUN OR I WILL DIE. lol. yes, dramatics is what you'll get after you get desperate for some vitamin D. :)

that said, everyone keeps telling me that out of my two choices (LA or San Fran), to move to SF because it's a really amazing city for many reasons and because LA is not a nice city to live in, but i need to hear it straight up from you guys how cloudy or foggy or cold it is year round or else i might regret my decision! how many straight days of rain or clouds do you often get?

also: please list your Top 5 neighborhoods to live in San Francisco! i know nothing. :D

and is it really as insane as they say it is to find a decent apartment? i've heard some horror stories. ^_^

**EDIT: thanks so much for all of your responses. :D you guys are great, thx.
Heather :)

12:37 am - Gothic Castle Apartment Building?
Hello everyone!  I hope this is the right place to ask.
My husband and I may be moving to Emeryville soon, and as I was searching online for housing, someone mentioned having lived in an apartment in Hayward that was built in 1907, that looks like a little gothic castle.
This, I must see.
Her post was made over a year ago and emailing her for more information only got me a mail daemon failure notice, and after a couple hours trying to find the place using Google, I thought to ask people who live thereabouts.  My lj interest search for Hayward brought me here.

So has anyone seen this place?  Does it have a website that cleverly eluded me?  What's the address, and how can I contact the landlord?

If nothing else I'd like to submit it to castledupont.com
Anyone?

**update**
Oh wow, even though she made the post over a year ago, I already got a reply with the address and was able to get a streetview of it from google.
Thanks everyone!
